Vera Obeng

Multidisciplinary artist and photographer, Auburn

Vera Obeng is a Ghanaian multidisciplinary artist and photographer based in Auburn, Alabama, whose practice spans photography, installation, photo transfer, wood, beads, fabric, found objects, and material experimentation. Her work explores memory, expanded portraiture, presence and absence, and the relationship between images and the objects that carry them. Trained in photography, painting, and sculpture, she holds an HND from Takoradi Technical University, a diploma from the Photography Institute in London, and a BFA in Painting and Sculpture from KNUST, Ghana.

Her projects include Our Forefathers, Beautiful Burden, The Extent of Nothingness, The Black & White Experience, Ama Totoi: A Self Odyssey, and My Family Portrait, developed through the Ghanaian-German Swap Families exchange, through which she has examined ancestry, identity, grief, feminine labour, family histories, and material approaches to portraiture. Her work has been shown in Ghana and internationally, including at the British Council in Kumasi, Prempeh II Library at KNUST, and Alte Feuerwache in Cologne. She also contributed photographic research to the British Academy-funded Old Parks, New Futures project and is affiliated with blaxTARLINES KUMASI and eX-paraMental, an experimental collective for multidisciplinary artistic and theoretical inquiry.
