Sirin Chakraborty is an electrical engineer from India pursuing a Ph.D. at Auburn University. Alongside her doctoral research, she works as a part-time painter and graphic designer, specializing in acrylic painting and digital art. She enjoys experimenting with color, texture, and materials, finding creative possibilities in ordinary things.
Her piece, The Color of Home, brings together artworks made with the natural stain of red soil collected in Camp Hill, Alabama, and an installation showing the process behind them. By sifting and cleaning the soil, then mixing it with water and glue, she transforms the ground beneath our feet into a medium for art. For Sirin, this soil recalls childhood memories of Santiniketan, a small town in West Bengal, India, where she is from, known for its distinctive red earth and rich artistic heritage. This familiar earth connects the home she remembers with the home she is finding in Alabama, on the other side of the world.
